Every school deserves a vibrant space like this! I had the pleasure of transforming the outdoor kitchen at Eudunda Area School with a bright, colourful mural designed to create a welcoming atmosphere for students. The goal was to turn a dull, beige area into a lively and inspiring environment that promotes positive wellbeing for both students and the wider school community. This project was an absolute joy to work on during Term 4, 2024.
The sense of community at this school was truly remarkable. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed, supported, and knew I was working with a unique and dedicated team. The grounds staff had already put in a lot of hard work to prepare the space, including installing blue boarding around the outdoor area to provide me with a smooth, blank canvas to work on. They were also incredibly helpful throughout the installation week, assisting with ladders and offering support every step of the way.
Two Year 11 students and Tali de Lacy (Adelaide artist) assisted me in painting the mural. It has transformed the space from being very beige to being a welcoming space that is playful and inspiring.
Thank you to Mrs Anna Roebuck and her team for inviting me to your school. You have an exceptional school, the staff and students were a delight.
The best parts of this project:
The wall preparation was all completed prior to us arriving. So much work went into blue boarding, plastering and priming the walls so they were ready for me to paint.
It was such a unique surface. The outdoor kitchen has two large doors that open and close. So that meant painting these double-sided to match with the walls both when they are open and when they are closed.
Working with the Year 11 students on this wall and seeing them adapt so quickly to this medium. They started by experimenting with tagging then learnt to create gradients and draw freehand.
Visiting Eudunda! What a beautiful town. I highly recommend the local bakery and everyone was so friendly.
Working with Tali, I always enjoy painting together. This was another very fun project and she never complains even when I gave her the tedious job of covering the kitchen in tape and drop sheets.
It was a blessing to have a roof that protected us from the wind, rain and sun. We had it all! This was a very hot week and amongst it all we had some rain.
