Artist in Residence at Wilderness School: 2023
In 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to be the Artist in Residence at Wilderness School in Adelaide, an all-girls school that truly stands out. From the academic excellence to the beautiful facilities, it’s clear that this is a place where creativity and learning are nurtured. The real magic happened in the art centre, a charming old house full of character. The space had the vibe of an artist collective rather than a typical high school art room, which made it a joy to work in.
I spent the entire year working with students, visiting the school for two one-week blocks each semester. During these visits, I met with every class, from prep to Year 12, running workshops, giving artist talks, and explaining my creative process. What really impressed me was how quickly the students adapted to aerosol techniques. Their drawing skills translated effortlessly to spray paint, and I was amazed by their talent and confidence.
One of the most memorable moments was attending the Year 9 camp, where I helped students paint murals on their cabin walls and a water tank. It was hands-on, messy, and so much fun! Seeing the students collaborate and bring their ideas to life was a highlight of the year.
I was also invited to have an exhibition at the school, where many of my pieces were purchased by the staff. I even ran a staff workshop after school, which gave me a chance to connect with the team and share some creative energy with them.
Wilderness School truly knows how to support artists and offers students the opportunity to work with a diverse range of creatives every year. The level of support they provide makes this residency a unique and rewarding experience. I loved every moment and would highly recommend it to any artist seeking a creative and enriching environment.
